When you go out on dates or parties with friends and acquaintances, you would never in a million years expect to be violated. But it happens more often than you might realise. Before the hypnotic drugs became a popular tool to perpetrate a date rape, alcohol was the drug of choice. You may remember you parents telling you not to drink too much and lose your senses. Now there is a lot more to worry about than alcohol. Now you have to worry about being slipped a "mickey" in your drink, such as GHB (Gamma Hydroxy Butyrate), Rohypnol and Ketamine Hydrochloride.

Sexual predators like using these drugs because they can easily slip the drug into a drink or in food. Date rape drugs are virtually undetectable. The victim will not taste the drug, nor will they be able to see it in their drink. The victim will have little or no memory of the sexual encounter, and will be virtually unconscious. The date rape drug could be used on males or females, but we normally hear of it used on the female sex. The drug acts quickly when in the blood stream of the victim, and makes the person very sexually responsive, yet she may have no memory of what transpired. She cannot consent to sex, because she isn't being able to make a choice-because she isn't even conscious of the encounter. The victim will not be aware she has been raped.

If you have a suspicion that you may have been assaulted in a date rape, it is important to make a police report and go to an emergency room. The date rape drugs leave the body fairly quickly, and the doctors have to be specifically looking for these drugs in order to find them in the blood. These predator-type drugs will not be found in any routine drug test. The only tell-tale sign that you might have been drugged is that you may have the feeling of being hung over the next day.

A victim that has had sexual contact but did not offer consent, or does not remember the incident has been raped. When a date rape has occurred, it is sometimes perpetrated by more than one person. There may have been a party going on at your expense, without your knowledge. There are usually some telltale signs that a sexual assault has taken place. You may have swelling and soreness, bruising, and possibly abrasions of the genital and anal areas. You also may find bruising about your extremities where you may have been held down.

Date Rape Drug: Rohypnol

Rohypnol is sold in Europe and in Latin America as a drug to treat insomnia, and as a pre-op medication given to sedate the patient before surgery, but it is not a legal drug in the United States. Rohypnol is one of the drugs of choice used by sexual predators to violate their victims. It is a small white tablet that is scored in the middle and has the word "Roche" imprinted on it. Common street names for this drug are Ruffles, Ruffies, Mexican Valium, Forget-Me-Pills, among others. Rohypnol is a prescription drug with the generic name of Flunitrazepam. It's not used clinically in the US, but it is sold as a street drug. Sexual predators love to administer this drug because it causes amnesia in the victim, as well as excitability. This drug can keep a person under the influence between 8 and 12 hours without alcohol and even up to 36 hours with the use of alcohol, which is very scary because the victim can be repeatedly violated by many people and never suspect a thing unless they have some physical signs of being violated.

Date Rape Drug: Gamma Hydroxyl Butyrate

Gamma hydroxyl Butyrate (GHB) is a liquid that is colorless and tasteless. Some of the street names for this drug are Easy Lay, Liquid Dream, EZ Lay, Get-Her-to-Bed, and Liquid Ecstasy. This drug is not manufactured by any drug company, but is produced in illegal chemistry labs and in private homes by amateur chemists. This is a very dangerous drug. The sexual predator that uses this drug on his victim could cause the victim to go into a coma and death could result from low blood pressure and respiratory depression.

GHB is very fast acting; it starts working within just minutes of ingestion. The effects can last up to 6 hours without alcohol and up to 36 hours with alcohol. Since there is no standardized dosage of this drug, it could be easy to overdose the victim, and coma could result in just a matter of minutes.

Date Rape Drug: Ketamine Hydrochloride

Ketamine Hydrochloride (KH) is a drug that is used in veterinary medicine used to sedate and anesthetize animals. When used as a date rape drug the victim is only vaguely aware of anything that is going on, and the victim is in a state of euphoria. Some of the street names for this date rape drug are Vitamin K, Super K, and Special K. This drug is a Dissociative drug that makes you feel detached from your body.

On the street, KH can be taken orally or nasally (by snorting it), and it can also be mainlined through a vein. It is often mixed with other drugs such as cocaine and heroine. Ketamine Hydrochloride is manufactured as an off-white powder, which is normally reconstituted in sterile water for use as an anesthetic in veterinary medicine, but in the wrong hands it is used as a party or date rape drug. KH causes hallucinations, dizziness, cardiac excitability, respiratory depression, and can cause coma and death.

Have fun but be aware

Don't fall victim to ingesting a date rape drug. When you in a club, do not ever accept open drinks from anyone you don't know. When someone offers an open bottle or can, just say "No thanks", and that also includes drinks served in a glass. If you are in a bar and want a drink or something to eat, get it yourself. The bottom line is: don't trust anyone you have just met to bring you a drink, because that is just the occasion when a date rape drug can be administered to you. When at a party, don't accept any drinks that are not in a closed container, and never leave your drink or food unattended. If you should need to go to the rest room, and you have to leave your food or drink, don't come back to your food and drink-be safe and order something fresh.

Watch and listen to what is going on around you. If you should hear people talking about using date rape drugs or you see people that seem to be more inebriated than what seems normal to you, trust your gut and get out of that environment fast. You may hear people bragging about their past experiences when using the drug on unsuspecting victims, especially when alcohol is involved. It is important to keep your wits about you at all times and if you suspect something isn't right, trust your instincts and leave the bar, club or party.
